A fire of undetermined origin totally destroyed two barns, a stable and other outbuildings at the farm of P.D. Gwaltney, Jr., about five miles from Smithfield on the road to Isle of Wight last Monday night. The fire started about 10 o'clock and reached its height of destruction about 11 o'clock. Three mules and one horse, which were in the stable in which the fire started, were burned up before anyone could come to their assistance. An automobile, farm implements, feed, grain and other things were also destroyed. Other livestock and domestic animals were turned loose in time to prevent their burning. Furniture was moved out of the house for an emergency but the fire had spent itself without reaching it. *Additional information: Pembroke Decatur GWALTNEY II (1861 - 1936) & his father formed in 1882 P.D. Gwaltney Jr. & Co., a leading meat packer - later called Gwaltney, Inc., before its merger into Smithfield Foods. He & his parents are buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Smithfield.
