Whitehead has been in his family three hundred years, according to statements by him. The farm, now consisting of ninety-six acres, is from the original grant of sixteen hundred acres. The tract of land has been handed down from the original grant of sixteen hundred acres. The tract of land has been handed down, from the Arthur Smith branch of the family, and was an original land grant to Mr. Smith. The original tract of land consisted of fourteen hundred acres, including the site on which Smithfield now stands. It was later augmented by Governor Berkley two hundred more acres for paying passage of several more colonists from England to Virginia. This addition to the original made the farm sixteen hundred acres, known for a long time as the Grove Farm. It came into the Whitehead family by the will of the last Arthur Smith in the family, who was Sheriff Whitehead's great, great uncle. His sisters married the Sheriff's great grandfather. Thus has the present farm been handed down from generation to generation from 1637 to 1937. *Additional information: Sheriff William Colgate WHITEHEAD (25 Jul 1886 - 19 Dec 1955) is buried in St. Luke's Memorial Park, Benns Church.
