R.A. Horne, prominent merchant of Zuni, Isle of Wight County, was attacked Thursday morning about 12:30 o'clock by Negro burglars whom he heard in his store which adjoins his residence and was badly beaten over the head and face by one of the three while the others made a get away with about one hundred dollars worth of merchandise. Mr. Horne closed his store as usual and went to his home which is adjoining the house. A little after midnight he heard a noise in the store and opening the back door entered to find burglars in possession. Mr. Horne showed fight and ordered the men out, when one of them attacked him and beat his face and head with some blunt instrument. He notified Sheriff W.C. Whitehead, who is investigating the case and who has some clues to the intruders. Mr. Horne, who is 60 years of age, was confined to his bed from the bruises and blows he received. It is estimated that the intruders made off with merchandise worth at least $100. Found in the store after the hold up was a grey cap with the label of a Norfolk loan office sewn in the top. Reported missing were 15 cartons of cigarettes, a white shirt, seven colored shirts; 12 pairs of pants and 12 assorted neckties in Christmas boxes.
