$800,000 Fire at Zuni Destroys Storage Plant 

  ZUNI - Fire units from as far away as Petersburg responded to a smoldering 
fire which erupted Saturday and destroyed the Columbian Peanut Co. storage 
plant here. 

  The blaze first discovered Thursday afternoon, smoldered for two days before 
getting out of control Saturday. 

  Some 4.5 million pounds of peanuts in the shell were reported to be a 
complete loss, and estimates of the damage range in the neighborhood of $800,000. 

  The fire originated in a cylinder-shape concrete and steel storage building 
125 feet high, with walls eight inches thick. 

  The plant, which was erected in 1946, was owned by the Zuni Storage Co. and 
leased to Columbian by the firm, headed by Mrs. L.B. Callis of Suffolk. 

  Firemen from Suffolk, Ivor, Wakefield and Petersburg were on the scene 
during the weekend and early Monday the Ivor Volunteer Fire Dept was keeping 
watch at the scene as the ruins continued to smolder.

Million-Dollar Fire At Zuni Still Burns

  ZUNI, Va. (AP) - Officials at the Columbian Peanut Co. say that a month-old 
fire in a peanut silo here will just have to burn itself out. 

  Earl Holt says it is impossible to tell how much longer the million dollar 
fire will continue - maybe a week or maybe longer. 

  The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.  It has destroyed peanuts 
valued at $750,000 and ruined a four-story mill and the storage silo both 
valued at $250,000.
