In an impressive military ceremony under a beautiful blue October sky, the name of the airport was changed to John Beverly Rose Field. Rose, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Edward Rose of Carrsville, a U.S. Army helicopter captain, was killed four months ago, on June 29, at Ft. Belvoir when the helicoptor in which he was checking out a fellow pilot fell to the ground. It was through the efforts of his fellow officers, mainly Capt. Bobby Machen and Capt. Sam Quarles, and other members of his outfit that Saturday's ceremony was made possible. Several hundred persons gathered at the airport, just off Highway 58 outside Franklin, to witness the ceremony and unveiling of a brick monument erected by Franklin citizens with bricks flown in by Army helicoptor. Rose, who was 27 when he died, was a member of 3rd Transportation Company (Light Helicoptor) at Ft. Belvoir, which served the Pentagon. A dozen helicopters from Rose's outfit flanked the field during Saturday's ceremonies. These craft brought in members of the Army band and troops who performed in the dedication ceremony. The band opened the ceremony by marching to a designated area near the rostrum and monument, where they performed with an honor guard from the 3rd Infantry Battalion, Military Dist. of Washington, the same unit that stood in the late President Kennedy's cortege. Col. Hugh Webb, commanding officer of Davidson Army Air Force Field at Ft. Belvoir, addressed the crowd, followed by a brief talk by Franklin Mayor Dr. Darden W. Jones, who also read a personal note from Gov. Albertis Harrison. Both Col. Webb and Mayor Jones paid tribute to Rose, who is buried in the Beaverdam Baptist Church cemetery near Carrsville. Following dedicatory addresses the monument was unveiled as Rose's parents and Mayor Jones stood nearby. The Army band then played the National Anthem and paraded in review by the rostrum with the special detachment of troops. In his dedicatory address Mayor Jones said that the life Rose had lived was worthy of special recogntion, that the dedication was, in truth, a tribute to all who leave home to serve our country and that it was hoped that those who had lost loved ones would have a feeling of fellowship toward the testimony of service. A number of other dignataries were at the dedication, including State Senator William V. Rawlings. Rose was a 1958 graduate of VPI and received his masters degree there in 1959. He received his Army commission soon afterwards and went into helicopter flight training. He was sent to Europe in 1961, where he spent three years and was promoted to captain. He became a member of the Shrine in the Bavarian town of Garmisch in 1963 and was a Mason of the 32nd degree through the Scottish Rite. He was not married. All of his immediate family were at the dedication ceremony, including a brother, Robert of Carrsville, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth, a Windsor High School student and Mrs. JoAnne Rose Willis.
