Elbert Wilson Atkinson 

  Elbert Wilson Atkinson, 78, died Friday, April 19 in Louise Obici Memorial 
Hospital, Suffolk. 

  Mr. Atkinson was a native of Surry County.  He was retired from Norfolk 
Naval Shipyard, Shop 51, in 1977 with 38 years of service.  He attended 
Antioch Christian Church, Windsor, and was a member of the Myrtle Hunt Club. 
He was the son of the late Elbert Walter and Rebecca June James Atkinson. 

  Survivors include his wife, Lucy Jones Atkinson; five daughters, Rebecca 
Griffin, and Brenda Carr, both of Windsor, Ann Griffin of Carrollton, Barbara 
Winston of Smithfield, and Diane Turner of Franklin; one son, Elbert "Buddy" 
Atkinson Jr. of Suffolk; one sister, Hazel Edwards of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; 
eight grandchildren; and one great grandchild. 

  Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 22, at Colonial Funeral 
Home, officiated by the Rev. Victor Hunter.  Burial was in Mill Swamp 
Cemetery, Ivor. 

  Pallbearers were Herman Bowman, Kent Pittman, Ed Stroud, Shelton Jones, 
Tommy Jones and Raymond Brock. 

  Colonial Funeral Home handled arrangements.
