ADAMS SMITHFIELD - Aubrey Thomas Adams, 55, who retired Sept. 1 as mayor of Smithfield after four years, died Thursday morning in Riverside Hospital, Newport News, after a brief illness. He had been on the Town Council since 1963 and was elected in 1965. His council term had two more years to run. Carl M. Beale Jr. succeeded Adams as mayor. A native of Charlotte Court House, he was the husband of Mrs. Pattie Jeffreys Adams and a son of the late Thomas R. and Mrs. Eva Bailey Adams. He was a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College and took a master's degree in agricultural education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He taught in public schools of Augusta County 15 years. He was a member of the Smithfield High School faculty from 1950 until 1964, when he resigned to become assistant supervisor of agricultural education in Eastern Virginia. He still held this position. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a past president of its Wesley Bible Class, and a member of Smithfield Ruritan Club, of which he was a past president, vice president, and treasurer. He was a past president of Isle of Wight Education Association. He was a member of the board of directors of the State Camp Association at Morgart's Beach and secretary and treasurer of the Virginia Agriculture Teachers Association. Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Miss Betty Susanne Adams, an airline stewardess at Miami; a son, Thomas Jeffreys Adams, a student at Beckley (W.Va.) College; and three brothers, Carroll F. Adams of Roanoke, Courtney B. Adams of Media, Pa., and Edwin G. Adams of Hampton. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Glenn G. Williams. Burial will be in St. Luke's Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Isle of Wight County Rescue Squad, Smithfield. Adams Aubrey Thomas Adams, 55, of 156 Talbot Drive, died Thursday morning, September 18, in Riverside Hospital, Newport News. A native of Charlotte County, he was the son of the late Thomas R. and Mrs. Eva Bailey Adams. He was a graduate of Charlotte High School at Charlotte Courthouse, a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a B.S. degree and completed the work for his Master of Science degree in Agricultural Education at VPI. Following college graduation, he taught Vocational Agriculture for 15 years in Augusta County before coming to Smithfield in 1950. He was a member of the Smithfield High School faculty until October 1964, when he was named Assistant Supervisor of Agricultural Education in Eastern Virginia, the position he held at his death. Mr. Adams was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Smithfield, past president of Wesley Bible Class; a member of the Smithfield Ruritan Club, serving as president, vice president and treasurer of the club; past president and member of the Isle of Wight Education Association; a member of the Board of Directors of the State Camp Association at Morgarts Beach and had served as secretary-treasurer of the Virginia Agriculture Teacher's Association. He was first elected to Smithfield's Town Council for a four year term in 1963 and re-elected in 1967. He was named Mayor in 1965 and again in 1967 for two year terms, the last of which ended August 1969. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pattie Jeffreys Adams, formerly of Chase City; a daughter, Miss Betty Susanne Adams of Miami, Fla.; one son, Thomas Jeffreys Adams of Beckley College, Beckley, W.Va.; three brothers, Carrol F. Adams of Roanoke; Courtney B. Adams of Media, Pa., and Edwin G. Adams of Hampton. Funeral services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Glenn G. Williams, pastor. Interment was in St. Lukes' Memorial Cemetery, with Colonial Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were J.D. Christian, J. Wm. Garrett, F. Perry Chapman, Armistead Jones, Walter H. Grizzard, Lewis F. Melton, M. Ross Minton III, and Edmund M. Clarke.
