ROBERT LEE BOYKIN 

BOY DROWNED HERE SUNDAY 

  Robert Lee Boykin, aged 18*, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Boykins [sic], lost 
his life by drowning in the Pagan River Sunday morning, July 4th about 9:30 
o'clock.  The boy, with a younger companion whose name was not learned, went 
swimming in the river just off the H.G. Dashiell farm.  He suddenly called 
for help, but before aid could reach him he disappeared.

  An uncle, Luther Thorne, with several other persons, was fishing from an 
anchored boat a short distance away, but before Thorne could haul up anchor 
and get to the drowning lad he had gone down the last time.  The river was 
dragged Sunday and Monday without avail.  George Haverty with a fishing party, 
however, discovered the body floating at 5 p.m. Monday about 300 feet from 
where the drowning occurred.

  The scene of the tragedy is about one mile below Smithfield.

  Young Boykin formerly had been in a C.C.C. Camp, but recently was employed 
on the Dashiell farm.

  Funeral services were held at the home of Mr. Harrison Thorne with the Rev. 
L.F. Paulette officiating Wednesday afternoon.

  Active pallbearers were: Grover Bradshaw, Clarence Bradshaw, William 
Bradshaw, Bob Lee Nelms, James Walls, Luther Boykins.

  Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family.

  Burial was in the Central Hill Cemetery.
