BUTLER, 66, FORMER RECORDER OF BERKLEY, DIES William Harrison Butler, 66, former recorder of the Town of Berkley, died yesterday at 3:3O a.m. at a local hospital. Although his health had been failing for some months, his condition did not become critical until last Sunday when he was sent to the hospital. A quarter of a century ago, he was an influential political factor and a close friend of the late W.W. Dey, commissioner of revenue. Before Berkley was annexed to the city, Mr. Butler was the town recorder. He later was added to the office staff of Mr. Dey and served also under the administrations of Edward G. Doran and A. Plummer Pannil, each of whom served as commissioner of revenue for the city. For some years he was connected with the Broulett Book Company which many years ago, operated the largest periodical and stationery establishment in this section. He also was employed as a reporter by the Norfolk Landmark, the Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Dispatch. Son of the late D.E. Butler and Mrs. Alice Ann Matthews Butler, he was a native of Isle of Wight County. Survivors include a sister Mrs. L.W. Bartlett; a brother Arthur Cary Butler, both of Norfolk, and several neices and nephews. He was a member of the First Congregational Christian Church, Berkley, and resided at 218 Hardy Avenue. Funeral Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk, and burial will be in Riverside Memorial Cemetery.
