BATTEN PASSES RECENTLY Harry Calcotte Batten, formerly of Windsor, Isle of Wight County, died in Demning [sic; Deming], N.M., Wednesday after a brief attack of pneumonia. He was the son of the late Henry and Mrs. Fannie Womble Batten, and a great nephew of Col. Alexander Calcotte, who was killed in the battle of Gettysburg. He was a graduate of the Medical College of Richmond, a member of Amnesty Lodge No. 70, of Richmond and a member of the McGrotry Commandry of Demning. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. W.H. Johnson of Windsor, and Miss LeClaire Batten, of Richmond; one brother, D.W. Batten, of Estill, S.C.; a nephew, Wise Batten, Jr. and a niece, Mary Frances Batten of Estill, S.C. (IoW.Co. M.Reg., 1880 p. 183 #4) Birthdate &c. from WW-I draft registration card. He was living in Deming in 1918. His nearest relative was given as Mrs. L.O. Tabb of Chester, Va. His relationship to Laura Otelia (GILL; Mrs. Theo K.) TABB was tenuous. Her daughter Tedia 1m. James Dixie WOMBLE, and their son James Bagby WOMBLE (1902 - 1962) appears with Laura in the 1910-30 Census returns. Dixie and Fanny were children of Sarah Armenia BRACY and her first husband James W. WOMBLE; widowed, Sarah 2m. Charles EDWARDS. Find a Grave lists a Harry Batten in Mountain View Cemetery in Deming, but the date of death is given as 1932. (Memorial #131036261) Lt.Col. Alexander Daniel Callcote [spelled variously] was slain leading the 3rd Va. Infantry during Pickett's Charge. He was reinterred after the war in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond.
