BOWDEN CALLED BY DEATH SUFFOLK, VIRGINIA Through telegrams received last evening the children and close friends of James R. Bowden learned of his death in Suffolk, Virginia, at 7:30 p.m., the information following other telegrams and letters received during the last several days that indicated his condition of health. He had been somewhat feeble for several weeks and a message received a few days ago suggested that the end was not far off. The eldest son, John B. Bowden, left Thursday and was due to arrive at his father's bedside this morning, death having beaten him in his race to reach his father's side before the end came. James R. Bowden was born in Isle-of-Wight county, Virginia, November 20, 1849, and had he lived until November 20 next, he would have been 75 years of age. He was the last of several brothers, being the oldest, but two sisters survive, Mrs. Jennie Spivey of Richmond, Virginia, and Mrs. Diana Joiner [sic; Joyner] of Zuni, Virginia. On January 27, 1874, James R. Bowden and Miss Anna Elizabeth Whitehead were united in marriage. In May, 1911, the latter passed away in Hanford. Of the children of that union, surviving, J.B. Bowden is the oldest. Others are Eustace Quinton Bowden of Los Angeles, F. Judson and Mrs. J. Larry Smith of Hanford, A.B. Bowden of Fresno, and Mrs. Lucy Roberts of Glendale, California. Mrs. John LaFortune of Grangeville was a member of the Bowden household from girlhood up. The eldest daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Goodrich, passed away a little over three years age and is buried here. The family came to California from Virginia in 1907, and Hanford has been their home since. Mr. Bowden left here nearly a year ago and in November last he and Mrs. Mattie Davis united in marriage. They made their home near Windsor, Virginia. She survives the deceased. During his life-time Mr. Bowden was a faithful member of the Baptist church, holding membership here from the time of his arrival in Hanford, until a short time after he left for his home state, Virginia last summer, when he transferred by letter to a church in the Windsor community. Also for many years before coming here Mr. Bowden was prominent in the Masonic order in his home community. He transferred membership to Hanford Lodge No. 279 F. and A.M. and held membership here until after leaving for Virginia, when he re-transferred to a lodge there. In addition to the children mentioned, twelve grandchildren survive. They are Floyd, Mary Evelyn, Jacqueline and Marjorie, children of Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Bowden; Eloise, Virginia, Beatrice and Laurence Wayne Smith, children of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Smith; Wilma Lee and Judson Gamble Bowden, children of Mr. and Mrs. F. Judson Bowden, and Myrtle and Richard Roberts, children of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Roberts. No arrangements had been made for the funeral last evening. Word is expected today from J.B. Bowden, who will arrive in Virginia this morning, indicating whether the remains will be brought here for burial, or be laid to rest there. ****************************************************************************** FUNERAL WEDNESDAY FOR JAMES R. BOWDEN The remains of James R. Bowden who died in Virginia on Monday last, will arrive here at noon today on the Sante Fe, in the care of his son John B. Bowden who hastened eastward upon word of the serious illness of his father, but arrived there a day too late. Arrangements for the burial here have been made with Undertaker Robert L. Russell. The services will be held at the Russell chapel at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, the Masonic lodge will officiate, and burial will be in the family plot in Hanford cemetery. The Rev. J.B. Travis of the First Baptist church will conduct the services.
