All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ MALACHI BATTEN SETS FIRE TO HOME AND THEN SHOOTS HIMSELF Malechi [sic*] Batten, about 65 years of age*, living on Bowling Green road, near Isle of Wight Courthouse, on Wednesday afternoon at about 6 o'clock, set fire to his home and barn and outbuildings, destroying the entire contents, along with two horses or mules, a pen of a dozen hogs and a cow, and then shot himself with a shotgun, tearing off the lower jaw. Aid was summoned and he was carried to the home of his brothers, Mr. Charlie Batten, near Smithfield, and at a late hour last night was still alive. It was said that little hope was held for his recovery. The reason for Mr. Batten's rash act was not learned. Age &c. from D.Cert. #19286 (Newport #6), which gives sn/o Monroe Batten (b. IoW.Co.) & Louisa Batten (b. Surry Co.). His widow, Annie G. (WHITLEY LATIMER) BATTEN, is buried with her first husband in Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Her parents are buried there also. IWCHS GSSTF #56.
