Surviving her are four daughters: Mrs. A. Greenstreet and Mrs. C.E. Garris of Norfolk; Mrs. N.T. Lewis, Jr., and Mrs. A.J. Spivey, of Windsor; three brothers: Rev. J.W. Barrett of Hopewell; M.T. and R.H. Barrett of Isle of Wight Co.; 10 grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends. She joined Antioch Church in her early teens, changing her membership to Colosse in 1924 with the late J.R. Bowden, of California. For nearly 15 years she had been a worker in Colosse Church. Her great [sic; incomplete in original] The funeral services were held at Colosse Sunday evening in the midst of a host of relatives and friends. "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" was sung by the choir. Rev. J.S. Cobb, her pastor, preached from the text, Psalm 23:4, selected by her before she died. Bro. A.J. Haste, pastor of the "Church of God," Norfolk, spoke on this subject also and talked of the pleasant acquaintances in the home with her during her illness. Bro. Howard, of Suffolk, gave a prayer in behalf of the life which she had lived and to comfort the heartbroken. A double quartet of young men of Colosse sang "Rock of Ages," a short while ago in the home where Mrs. Bowden was and the repeated this at the funeral. Mrs. Effie Spivey, Mrs. Alma Ballard, and Messrs. John and Jim Avis sang as a quartet "Does Jesus Care?" Bro. Haste and wife of Norfolk sang very sweetly as a duet "Farewell." There were many beautiful flowers, especially the double design of white lilies and carnations which covered the white casket. The flower girls were composed of the Euzelian class, of which she was a devoted teacher. Mises Ruby and Fay Outland led the class carrying lovely design of white lilies given by the Euzelian class. Active pallbearers were nephews of the deceased: Billie, Walter, Joe, Pressley, Raleigh and Bobbie Barrett, each wearing a white flower, requested by her. The ushers were: Messrs. Rawlston Rhodes, Ralph Bowden, Sherman Redd and Homan Powell, each wearing a white flower. Mr. Truxley Spivey, of Franklin, played at the organ. After the services at the grave, the body was lowered in Antioch Cemetery by the side of her first husband, who preceded her to the grave 18 years ago. To know her was to love her, and her prayers, teachings, and influence will live on, though she has passed away; and with the writer of the Proverbs we must say, too: "Her children rise up and call her blessed." A loving daughter.
