VASCO D. BATTEN 

  Vasco DeBatten [sic] died Sunday, January 6, at the hospital in Trenton, 
New Jersey.  His body was shipped to the old home place and laid to rest 
on Wednesday, January 9.  He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Vasco D. Batten, 
father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Batten; three brothers, Caleb, Tazville 
[sic; Tazewell] and Taylor; three sisters, Mrs. H.M. Thacker, Mrs. M.R. 
Jones and Mrs. A.B. Gwaltney, all of Smithfield and 22 nieces and nephews. 
His age was 50.  Burial services were conducted at Mill Swamp cemetery. 
Active pallbearers were Caleb Batten, Taylor Batten, Tazville Batten, Dudley 
Batten, Herten, Herbert Thacker, Maurice Jones, Wally Jones and Mr. Elmo 
Batten.  Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family.  Mr. Paulette, Mr. 
Oglesby and Mr. Cleveland conducted the services.  "Jesus Savior Pilot Me" 
and "Abide With Me" were sung at the grave.
