Mr. Barrett was a native of Isle of Wight County. He was retired from Gwaltney Meat Packing Plant with 20 years of service. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, Smithfield, and was the son of the late Mills Thomas Sr. and ["Anna" Indiana Rebecca Carr, and husband of the late] Dorothy Uzzell Barrett. Survivors include one daughter, Ethel B. Long of Hampton; one sister, Emma B. Tomlin of Ivor, two half-brothers, Edgar Barrett of Hampton and Emitt [sic; Emmit] Barrett of Zuni; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. Funeral services are to be held Wednesday, Oct. 10, at 2 p.m. in Christ Episcopal Church, 32 Main Street, Smithfield, with Rector William P. Lantz officiating. Burial will be followed in Antioch Church, Windsor. Pallbearers were, Gurley A. Barlow Jr., Howard W. Gwaltney, Armistead Jones, Rodham T. Delk Sr., Dean Peden, Jack Barrett and Jeff Long. Memorial donations may be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 97, Smithfield, Virginia 23430 or Christ Episcopal Church, 32 Main Street, Smithfield, Virginia 23430. Colonial Funeral home handled arrangements.
