BARRETT DIES IN NEWPORT NEWS William Edward Barrett, 74, representative of Newport New and Warwick County in the House of Delegates from 1906 to 1908 and author of Virginia's race- division law, died early Monday in a hospital. Death followed several month's illness and a long period of failing health. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. at his home. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Barrett was born December 2, 1863, in Smithfield, a son of the late Robert and Mrs. Mary Edwards Barrett. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia law school. In 1890 he went to Newport News and established law practice with Thomas J. Barham now Judge of the City Corporation Court. Later he entered the real estate business in which he engaged until his death. Mr. Barrett was a member of the First Baptist Church, a trustee of the University of Richmond, a Mason, Knight Templer and Shriner, member of committee which built Newport News Masonic Temple, a member of the Pioneers of Thos. Nelson Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution and of the local bar association. Surviving are his wife who was Miss Emily M. Smith and a brother, Albert S. Barrett of Smithfield.
