All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ CHARLES HADDON BARLOW CHARLIE BARLOW FATALLY STRICKEN Charles Barlow, prominent resident of Isle of Wight County, living near Smithfield, died Saturday morning after a brief illness, aged 62. Mr. Barlow went out Friday morning to a piece of ground near a creek on his farm to look after clearing it off, and when he failed to come in for lunch, Mrs. Barlow went to look for him and found him lying on the ground, unconscious, having been stricken with paralysis. Help was summoned and a physician called. Mr. Barlow was carried by the neighbors to his home. He died Saturday without having regained consciousness. Mr. Barlow was overseer of the poor for the county, and took an active part in the co-operative peanut movement and in the Farmers Union. He was also an active member of the Smithfield Baptist Church, and a member of the Baracca Class. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lillie Key Barlow; three sons, Randolph Barlow, of Amherst, and Ryland and J.P. Barlow of Isle of Wight County, a daughter of Miss Charlotte Barlow, who is a student in a Washington school; one sister, Mrs. T.M. Krey of Newport News, and two brothers, Norman Barlow of Pons, Isle of Wight County and J.P. Barlow, of Newport News. Funeral services were conducted at the home near Smithfield Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock by the Rev. L.F. Paulette. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery. A quartet composed of the Rev. Mr. Paulette, George Whitley and Carol and Talmadge Gwaltney sang "We're Going Down the Valley, One by One." There were many beautiful floral tributes. The following were active pallbearers; R.W. Stallings, Armistead Whitley, C.D. Haverty, L.W. Hearn, V.A. Barlow, Henry Deshields, F.F. Jones and Jesse Matthews. Friends of the family acted as honorary pallbearers and scores of people attended the funeral and burial services.
