All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ LEMUEL CALLCOTE BRANCH Lemuel Callcote Branch, auditor of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co. died at 12:10 p.m. Wednesday at a hospital following an operation on Feb. 9, for appendicitis. He was born January 3, 1860 [sic; 1880] at Windsor, son of the late J.O. Branch, former treasurer of Isle of Wight County and a member of the House Delegates from that county, employed by the local shipyard in 1899, he of remained in the company's employ except for an interval of several years, rising to the position of auditor in 1928, which position he held at the time of his death. He attended Eastman Business College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Estelle Branch; a daughter, Mrs. Ezra Cornell IV of Ithaca, N.Y.; four brothers, Charles G., Talmage E. Clifford C. and J.H. Branch, and four sisters, Mrs. R.S. Irby and Mrs. H.B. Irby, and Ida May Branch all of Norfolk; Mrs. A.H. Knechet of Montreal, Canada, and S.C. and an uncle G.F. Batten of Hampton. A photo of his gravestone is included, and shows the correct date. His parents, James Orson & Ida May (BATTEN) BRANCH, are buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Shiloh Dr., near Windsor. Alexander Daniel Callcote [spelled variously] was slain leading the 3rd Va. Infantry during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg, and was buried on the battlefield. He was reinterred after the war in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond.
