Born Sept. 10, 1931, to the late Robert and Amarintha Daniel in Newport News, Va., she attended the public schools of Newport News and Hampton, Va. At an early age, she joined her family church home of St. Paul A.M.E. Professing her faith in our Savior, her worship pilgrimage continued through her husband's military career ultimately returning her to St. Paul A.M.E., where she remained a member until her homegoing. Her sister, Rebecca Perry, preceded her in death. She was united in holy matrimony on Dec. 27, 1952, to her devoted husband of 55 years, Lloyd Edward Chandler of Queens, N.Y. The couple lived in Portugal, New York, Michigan and Hampton, Va., settling in Isle of Wight County, Va., for the past 30 years. Her professional career experience began with the Book of the Month Club and culminated with tenured service with Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company, where she retired as a Group Chief Operator in 1988. Her citizen service covered the better part of 30 years building people and communities through historic preservation, serving on the Virginia Historic Review Board, service to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as the first African American female Vice President of the Virginia State Conference, prior service as the Chairwoman of the Isle of Wight County Planning Commission, and a past President of the women's auxiliary of Les Hommes Social and Civic Club. Our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and cousin possessed a vibrant, progressive and outgoing spirit characterized by a never say die attitude with a compassionate spirit of lifting as she climbed. Evelyn Chandler leaves to mourn: her loving husband, Lloyd E. Chandler of Isle of Wight, Va.; one devoted son, Kenneth L. Chandler (Regina) of Portsmouth, Va.; one devoted goddaughter, Melissa R. Bailey of Hampton, Va.; two loving sisters, Martha Johnson of Newport News, Va., and Ruby Price (Robert) of Atlanta, Ga.; two loving brothers, Herman Daniel (Elnora) of Chicago, Ill., and Rubin Daniel (Cynthia) of Hampton, Va.; three inspired grandchildren, Mistress Kirsten L. Chandler, Mistress Jillian L. Chandler and Master Nicholas L. Chandler, all of Portsmouth, Va.; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends. These and many others whose lives she has shaped with her touch will join in the mourning of their loss and the celebration of her life and times. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, 2500 Chestnut Ave., Newport News, with the Rev. Donald F. White officiating. Interment will follow in Hampton Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Berceuse Funeral and Cremation Traditions, 2609 Cunningham Drive, Hampton. A wake will be held there from 6 to 8 p.m. Mrs. Chandler will lie in state one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
