Chapman, one of Isle of Wight County's most beloved citizens and for many years treasurer of the Town of Smithfield died at his home in Smithfield Wednesday morning. The deceased is survived by his wife, one daughter Ida Wright Chapman, two sons, Jack Chapman and Tom Chapman, one sister, Mrs. J. Walter Chapman. ****************************************************************************** JOHN MARVIN CHAPMAN DEATH JOHN M. CHAPMAN FORMER TREASURER SUCCUMBS AT HOME John Marvin Chapman, 97, affectionately known to hundreds in Isle of Wight and this section as Jack Chapman, for 29 years treasurer of the town of Smithfield died Wednesday, May 13th at 9 a.m. after a long illness at his home in Smithfield. He was the son of John Edwin and Caroline Chapman and was prominently connected by birth and marriage with some of the widely known citizens of Isle of Wight. Mr. Chapman was for many years treasurer of Smithfield and when his health forced his retirement he was succeeded by his daughter Miss Ida Wright Chapman. He was also treasurer of the Smithfield Water Company and of the Smithfield Electric and Power Company and past master of the Smithfield Masonic Lodge and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Ida Goodrich Chapman; two sons Jack Goodrich Chapman and Thomas Wright Chapman, a daughter, Miss Ida Wright Chapman and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at the residence on Church Street Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. by the Rev. L.D. Stables, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church with which Mr. Chapman was affiliated, assisted by the Rev. William Brayshaw, rector of Christ Episcopal Church. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery Smithfield. Services were largely attended.
