MARY SALOME KENT CHAPMAN, A FORMER TEACHER 

  Mary Salome Kent Chapman, 93, of the 300 block of Jefferson Drive, a retired 
office clerk and former teacher, died April 10, 1990, in her home.

  Mrs. Chapman, a native of Northumberland County, Va., had retired from 
Continental Telephone Co. after 17 years.  She was a former teacher in Isle of 
Wight County for four years, beginning in 1919.  She was a member of Trinity 
United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Women's Club of 
Smithfield.  She was the widow of James Edwin Chapman Sr. and had attended 
State Normal School, now Mary Washington College.

  Survivors include a daughter, Edwina C. Willard; two stepdaughters, 
Henrietta C. Gwaltney and Caroline C. Bell; and a son, James E. Chapman Jr., 
all of Smithfield; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

  The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Colonial Funeral Home by 
the Rev. Robert F. Cofield Jr.  Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery.  Friends 
may join the family from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.  Memorial 
donations may be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 
97, Smithfield, Va. 23430.
