Birdsong Jr. in Suffolk. Mrs. Chapman, known to friends and relatives as "Aunt Sallie", had been living with Mr. and Mrs. Birdsong since the death of her husband. She was widely known for civic, religious and cultural activities during her earlier years in Isle of Wight County. She served as organist at Benns Methodist Church for 50 years, was a charter member of the United Daughters of Confederacy Chapter in Smithfield and belonged also to the Smithfield Music Club and the Junto Woman's Club of Chuckatuck. Born in Mt. Holly, Isle of Wight County, she was a daughter of the late John Edwin and Caroline Chapman. She is survived by two other foster daughters, Mrs. Clyde Cooper of Portsmouth and Mrs. Julius D. Gwaltney of Smithfield; a foster son, Frank T. Wishart of Locust Grove; three nieces, Miss Ida Wright Chapman of Smithfield; Mrs. Victor Bell of Smithfield and Mrs. Bert Willard of Newport News, and three nephews, Jack Chapman of Orange; Thomas Wright Chapman of Danville, Ill. and James Edward Chapman, of Smithfield. Sallie Asbury* (CHAPMAN; Mrs. John W.) CHAPMAN, of Locust Grove, Benns Methodist Church organist, b. 24 Sep 1871, Mt. Holly, Isle of Wight Co., d. 18 Mar 1956, at foster daughter's home, Suffolk, interred in Old St. Luke's Church Cemetery*, Benns Church, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 31, No. 43, Mar. 22, 1956 *Additional information: Isle of Wight County Historical Society {IWCHS} Grave Site Survey Task Force {GSSTF} #17: http://www.iwchs.com/Cemetery-Reports.html Sallie & John share a gravestone, pictured with her Find a Grave Memorial, #78216769. The gravestone shows "Sallie Asberry," but Asbury seems a more likely spelling, especially for a Methodist. Her parents are buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Smithfield.
