Cofer, 75, of Newport News, and Russell Colbert Cofer, 80, of Smithfield, brothers, who died within a few hours of each other Friday night. Services for Nathaniel Cofer of St. Dennis Apartments, who died in a local hospital after a long illness, will be held at 4 this afternoon in Caffee Funeral Home, Newport News, with the Rev. T.V. Morison [sic; Morrison], rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be L.G. Lawson, Hal Mathias, Edward Gwaltney, Irbie Johnson, H. (Tip) Shackelford, George H. Hill, Edward N. Islin and Alan R. Day. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the family. Services for his brother, a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County who died in Smithfield [sic] also after a long illness, will be held at 2 this afternoon in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home, Smithfield, with the Rev. R.M. Recklay, officiating, asisted [sic; assisted] by the Rev. H.B. Jones and J.F. Flye. S. [sic; C.] Cofer, 80 And N. E. Cofer, 75, Buried Sunday Two elderly brothers, both natives of Isle of Wight County, died within four hours of each other in separate Newport News hospitals Friday night, October 28, 1955. Russell Colbert Cofer, 80, retired Isle of Wight farmer, died at 1 P.M. in Mary Immaculate Hospital following an operation four days earlier. His brother Nathaniel E. Cofer, 75, retired Newport News businessman, succumbed at 11 P. M. in Patrick Henry Hospital after an illness of several months. Nathaniel had been unconscious for some time before his death and did not know Russell had died. Both funerals were conducted Sunday. Rites for Russell Cofer were held at 2 P. M. in the chapel of the Bullock Funeral Home, Smithfield. Rev. K.M. Reckley, assisted by the Rev. J.F. Slye and the Rev H.B. Jones, officiated. Burial was in the family burial ground in Isle of Wight County. At 4 P.M. services for Nathaniel Cofer were conducted in the Caffee Funeral Home, Newport News, by the Rev. T.V. Morrison, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Newport News. Burial was in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Newport News. The brothers were the sons of the late John Randolph and Rebecca Dell [sic; Bell] Cofer of Isle of Wight and are survived by a sister, Mrs Nancy C. Batten of Smithfield and several nieces and nephews. In addition, Nathaniel Cofer is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nathaniel Cofer of Newport News. Russell was a member of the a Mill Swamp Baptist Church in Isle of Wight. His brother was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Newport News. Nathaniel Cofer had lived in Newport News about thirty-five years. Until his retirement several years ago because of ill health, he had been associated with the Cofer Motor Sales Company there.
