COX Smithfield, Sept 4 - Funeral rites will be held for James P. Cox, Sr., 67, at 5 pm. Friday at his home in Smithfield. Dr. J.C. Sinclair, pastor of Smithfield Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Smithfield.    Mr. Cox was drowned Thursday morning when he lost control of his automobile on Main Street in Smithfield and drove into the Pagan River.    He was a lifetime resident of Smithfield.  Prior to his retirement in 1945 he was associated with the Bank of Smithfield for 42 years.  He was a member of Smithfield Masonic Lodge No. 18, AF & AM and of the Royal Arch Chapter No. 67.  Mr. Cox also was an active member of Trinity Methodist Church.    In addition to his wife, Mrs. Sallie Batten Cox, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Harold L. Crane, of Hampton; one son, James P. Cox, Jr., of Richmond; two sisters, Miss Carrie P. Cox, of Smithfield and Mrs. Susie C. Cromwell, of Baltimore, and one brother, Robert A. Cox of Smithfield.
