RUTH PIERCE COX Suffolk, Nov. 20 - Funeral services for Mrs. .J. [sic] Cox, of Isle of Wight wife of T.J. Cox, who died at her home at Glenn's, were conducted at the grave in Ivy Hill Cemetery Sunday afternoon by the Rev. F.B. Oglesby, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church, Smithfield. Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband, one son, Frank Powell, an adopted son, Lloyd J. Cox, of Gloucester; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Pierce of Smithfield; three sisters, Mrs. J.H. Wilson and Miss Della Ann Pierce of Smithfield and Mrs. L.C. Pierce of Newport News, two brothers, A.R. Pierce of Smthfield [sic] and C.W. Pierce of Newport News. Active pallbearers were Lloyd Cox, Thurman Turner, J.J. Wilson, Jr., and Cecil C. Wilson and R.L. Winslow, L.C. Pierce. Friends of the family were honorary pallbearers. Susan Ruth (PIERCE; Mrs. T.J.) She does not appear on the Isle of Wight County Historical Society {IWCHS} Grave Site Survey Task Force {GSSTF} list, #48: http://www.iwchs.com/Cemetery-Reports.html She appears in the 1930 Census, sharing a rented house on Institute St., Smithfield, with her parents (e.d. #4, dwl 170); Ruth is listed as married, but as the head of household, and her husband is not enumerated with the family. This seems to be her father - William A. Pierce, 19, single, b. Isle of Wight Co., sn/o Wm. & Polly "Lizzie" Blount, 23, single, b. Martin Co., NC, dt/o Calvin & Susan m. 13 Dec 1883, Isle of Wight Co. (Ancestry.com "Virginia Marriages") Ruth's D.Cert. gives her mother as Elizabeth Blount. The family appears in the 1900 Census in Newport Dist. (#15), IoW.Co., with the matriarch given as Josie A., b. Feb 1860, Va; the decedent appears as Ruth R., b. Mar 1888. Find a Grave gives Josephine (Blount) Pierce {13 Feb 1860 NC - 1 Jan 1949, Newport News}, dt/o Calvin F. & Susan M. (Holloway) Blount [Mem. #182086056], and William Arthur Pierce {6 Dec 1863, IoW.Co. - 7 Jan 1949, Louisa Co}, sn/o William & Mary (Tomplin) Pierce [Mem. #182086225] - both bu. Ivy Hill Cemetery; however, they are not on the GSSTF list. It is not clear if "Josie" is identical with "Lizzie" - sister??
