Clayton, one of the prominent men of Isle of Wight county, died at his home near Zuni, Va., Wednesday, September 15, after an illness of several months. Mr. Clayton was 80 years, 4 months and 5 days old. He served as a soldier during the Civil War. The deceased in survived by six sons, J.C. Clayton, J.T. Clayton, J.M. Clayton, A.B. Clayton, Arthur Clayton, and Paul Clayton, and eight grandchildren. The funeral service, with the Masons in charge, assisted by Rev. J.W. Reams of Ivor, Va., took place at the home of the deceased Friday, September 17, at 3 o’clock. The active pallbearers were his six sons; the honorary pallbearers were F.P. Pulley, M. Bradshaw, G.W. West, E.J. Raiford, W.G. Raiford, Edwin Raiford, Mills Powell and Jim Felts. [sheet 2B, Farm, dwl/fam #38] *He does not appear among the recorded Southampton Co. Confederate veterans, but there are no extant rosters for the reserve or home guard units. Murdock M. Clayton, possibly Allen's half-brother, was in Co. H/5th Va.Cav. Likely their cousins, bros. James K.P. & John A.{W.} Clayton served in the Southampton Greys, Co. H/3rd Va.Inf. [Balfour. "Franklin and Southampton County in the Civil War" (1st ed.)] He does not appear on Isle of Wight Co. rosters either, nor on the pension rolls.
