COWLING Smithfield, Va., May 29 - Mr. John L. Cowling, one of the most prominent and prosperous merchants of Smithfield died yesterday about 4 o'clock.  His death came as a shock to his host of friends.  Mr. Cowling was an upright, Christian gentleman, and possessed the faculty of making all with whom he came in contact love him.  He was a member of the Town Council, which office he had filled faithfully and conscientiously.
