JOHN L. COWLING 

Smithfield, Va., May 29 - Mr. John L. Cowling, one of the most prominent and 
prosperous merchants of Smithfield died yesterday about 4 o'clock.  His death 
came as a shock to his host of friends.  Mr. Cowling was an upright, Christian 
gentleman, and possessed the faculty of making all with whom he came in 
contact love him.  He was a member of the Town Council, which office he had 
filled faithfully and conscientiously.  He was always ready and willing to 
help the poor and needy.  The deceased leaves a widow, mother, and two 
daughters.  The funeral will take place on Friday at 11 o'clock from the 
Methodist Church.

His father, Lt. John Everett COWLING, Co. F, 9th Va. Inf., CSA, 
   was killed instantly at the (land) Battle of Drewry's Bluff, 16 May 1864. 
   His widow Susan A. applied for a pension, 5 Aug 1889.
