JOHN D. CHALMERS 

Mr. John D. Chalmers, a prominent citizen of Smithfield, died there at 1 
o'clock this afternoon.  He was in usual health up to 10 o'clock this morning, 
when a stroke of apoplexy came.  In three hours he was a corpse.  The deceased 
was about 70 years old.  He leaves a widow, who was Miss Mollie Cowper, a 
cousin of Judge W.J. and Mr. Wallace Kilby, and Mrs. W.W. Murray of Suffolk. 
He was a brother of James F. Chalmers, 615 East Franklin street, Richmond, 
Va., and father of John Chalmers, 335 Washington Street, New York.  There 
are all told five children - two daughters and three sons.  The funeral 
arrangements had not been completed tonight.
