CLARKE Mrs. Amada Clarke, 78, prominent resident of Smithfield, died Thursday night at her home in Cary Street, Smithfield, following a stroke of paralysis. Surviving her are: Mrs. Martha Baird of Norfolk; a step-son, John I. Clarke, four step-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at Trinity Methodist Church, by the Rev. Herbert Southgate. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery. Amada [Amanda] L. She signed her Confederate Widow's pension application "Mrs. Amada Clarke," 14 Apr 1924. It states her husband served in the Charles City Cavalry - Troop D, 3rd Va. Cav.; that they were m. 3 Feb 1887, in the Smithfield Methodist Church, by Rev. T.N. McSimpson; and that he d. 29 Jan 1905 in Smithfield, of paralysis of the brain. Their m.rec: Jno.D. Clarke, 58, White, widowed, b. New Kent Co., res. IoW.Co., sn/o Dandridge & Martha R., Lumberman Amanda L. Edwards, 28, White, single, b. & res. IoW.Co., dt/o Rich'd C. & Mary m.lic. 22 Feb 1887 m. 23 Feb 1887, Smithfield, by T.McN. Simpson (IoW.Co. M.Reg. 1887 #37) Her step-son's D.Cert. (1945-13103 {Smithfield #21}) gives John Irvin Clarke, sn/o John D. Clarke, b. King & Queen Co., & Linda Bell (Pierce). Also buried in Ivy Hill, both his & his family's markers show CLARKE. (Find a Grave Mem. #111259939) The 1860 Census gives Amanda L., age 2. (E.Dist., IoW.Co.) The 1870 Census gives Amanda L., age 11. (Hardy Dist., IoW.Co.) Her father served in Isle of Wight Blues - Co. E, 9th Va. Inf. He enlisted 5 Mar 1863, at Mill Swamp Church; was reported AWOL, Spring, 1864; and was paroled 25 Apr 1865, in Isle of Wight Co.
