Clarke, 67, Of Smithfield Dies Suddenly John Irvin Clarke, 67, native of Richmond, Virginia, but a resident most of his life in Smithfield, died at his home in Smithfield from a heart attack at 6 PM Monday, the 25th. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mrs. John I. Clarke; one daughter, Mary Virginia Clarke of Smithfield; three sons, John D. Clarke, and Sidney A. Clarke, of Smithfield, and Edmond M. Clarke of Newport News. Mr. Clarke, who was engaged in the real estate and insurance business, was a member of the Smithfield Union Lodge No. 18 A.F. and A.M.; also a member of the Smithfield Royal Arch Chapter. He is a veteran of the Spanish-American War and a member of the Smithfield Methodist Church and the Wesleyan Bible Class. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church Wednesday afternoon, June 27th, at 5 PM with Dr. J.C. Sinclair officiating, assisted by Rev. L.F. Paulette and Rev. William Brayshaw. Masonic rites were held at the grave in Ivy Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers were W.C. Whitehead, J.E. Turner, James Everett, Walter Strange, Jack Grimes, Leon Chapman, Louis Chapman and H.C. Kello. D.Cert. 13103 (Newport #21) His father (1830 - 1905) was a Confederate veteran, having served as private in Troop D, 3rd VA Cavalry. Amanda applied for a pension 14 Apr 1927.
