CRUMPLER, 81, OF SMITHFIELD BURIED THURSDAY Lee J. Crumpler, 81, died at his home in Smithfield March 6th after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lulie Edwards Crumpler; one daughter, Miss Bessie Lee Crumpler, and a brother, George M. Crumpler all of Smithfield. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at Whitehead's Grove Baptist Church, of which he was a member, by the Rev. J.F. Colston. Burial was in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Seth Lankford, Jesse Oliver, J.W. Horne, Sr., Livy Vellines, Leon Chapman, S.T. Butler, E.P. Gale and Vernon Barnes. Mr. Crumpler had been a member of Whitehead Grove Baptist Church since 1876 and served as senior deacon, teacher of the Men's Bile Class and in other activities of church life. James, sn/o Solomon & "Polly" (Brock) Crumpler, 1m. 14 Mar 1854 Martha J. Bryant, dt/o Jonathan & Cherry (Webb) Bryant. Julia 1m. 8 Jan 1856 William Bridger, sn/o James & Betsey. [all in IoW.Co.] The 1900 Census (Smithfield town) gives b. Jul 1864, County Constable; 1870 (Newport) gives age 6; 1880 (Newport), age 16.
