Cornwell, 64, a contractor and former chief of police here, died at his home Friday. A native of Lancaster County, he had lived in Smithfield for the last 38 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Moody Cornwell; one daughter, Miss Sarah Cornwell, of Norfolk; three brothers, James L., Jack R. and Charles G. of Lancaster County, and three sisters, Mrs. C.E. Morris, of Lancaster County, Mrs. A. E. Ratcliffe, of Richmond, and Mrs. E.L. Courtney, of Kinsale, Va. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Jones Funeral Home here with burial in Mill's Swamp Cemetery in Isle of Wight County. ****************************************************************************** Edward J. Cornwell Buried Sunday At Mill Swamp Edward J. (Captain Ed) Cornwell, 64, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles G. Cornwell of Lancaster County, and husband of Mrs. Helen Moody Cornwell, died suddenly in Smithfield Friday morning, August 1, 1952. He was a native of Lancaster County, and had resided in Smithfield for 38 years. He was employed by the State for several years in road construction, served as Smithfield's chief of police for about six years, and was a contractor at the time of his death. Surviving, besides his wife, are a daughter, Miss Sarah Jane Cornwell, of Norfolk; three brothers, James L., Jack R. and Charles G. Cornwell, all of Lancaster County, and three sisters, Mrs. C.E. Morris, of Lancaster County; Mrs. A.E. Ratcliffe, of Richmond, and Mrs. E.L. Courtney, of Kinsale. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 3 P.M. EST at the Jones Funeral Home, Smithfield, by the Rev. Raymond E. Cardwell, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church. Burial was in Mill Swamp Cemetery. Pallbearers were Thomas Moody, Wilbur Moody, Cecil Turner, Clayton Barlow, Jack Moody, Randolph Moody, Horace Pierce and Walter Fitz.
