Charles E. Davis, Buried Monday At Benns Church 

  Charles Elliott Davis, commissioner of revenue for Isle of Wight County 40 
years, and prominent Smithfield resident, died Saturday, December 17, 1955 in 
his home after a long illness.  He was 58.  Sunday would have been his 59th 
birthday. 

  Mr. Davis was born in Isle of Wight County, December 18, 1887, son of the 
late James T. Davis and Mary Edvina Pitt Davis. 

  He was an active member of Benn's Methodist Church, serving on its board of 
stewards a number of years.  He also was a member of the Smithfield Masonic 
Lodge and the Smithfield Ruritan Club. 

  Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eliza Timberlake Davis; a sister, Mrs. 
Ernest L. Batten of Norfolk; five brothers, James T. Davis of Mathews, Paul 
Davis of San Francisco, Herman H. Davis of Greensboro, N. C., Eddie N. Davis 
and N. Fenton Davis, both of Norfolk, and a number of nieces and nephews. 

  Funeral services were conducted at 2 P.M. Monday in Benn's Methodist Church 
by the Rev. Raymond P. Carson, assisted by the Rev. Raymond William Brayshaw. 
Burial was in old St. Luke's Cemetery. 

  The body was taken from the Jones Funeral Home to the church at 1 P.M. 

  Pallbearers were Russell Laine, Cecil Gwaltney, Edwin Turner, Allie Fulgham, 
Frank Wishart and Charles L. Pettis.
