Carmel Church, on Wednesday evening, February 14, 1900, at 9 o'clock. Inheriting the social position and influence of an honored ancestry, his early life was favored above that of most men. He was born May 10, 1847. At an early age he began the study of medicine at the University of Virginia, completing the course and graduating from the University of Maryland, June 24, 1870. He at once began the practice of medicine in his native county, and at the time of his death ranked as one of the best physicians in this section. On February 13, 1873, he married Miss Irene A. Hall, a daughter of the late Colonel George T. Hall, of Isle of Wight Courthouse, who, with his aged father (Major I.W. Duck), a sister (Mrs. N.V. Hall), and four daughters (Mrs. L. Lawrence, Miss Luliea E, Mamie and Annie Maude) survive him. The writer knew him intimately and well. In his happy home he exemplified those virtues which secured for him the love and affection of his household and the sincere esteem of a large circle of friends. Always kind and courteous, as a neighbor and friend he was one of the best beloved men in the county. On account of feeble health for nearly a year previous to his death he was denied many of the ordinary enjoyments of life, but it seemed also to better prepare him for that change in which he was to resign all of earth, that he might receive in its stead heaven. He anticipated death with calmness, and as he stated to his aged father a short while prior to his dissolution, he looked hopefully to that blessed life beyond for rest, for freedom from pain, for the unmixed joys of the redeemed. He will be sadly missed in this community, not only by his afflicted family, but by all who knew him, and especially by the poor and needy. He was laid to rest at Mt. Carmel church on Friday evening, at 3 o'clock, the funeral services being conducted by the J.B. Dunn, of Suffolk. May the Lord comfort and sustain those who can but feel more keenly as the days go on the loss of such a companion and father. ****************************************************************************** SUFFOLK Holland Will Ask Legislation for a Town Charter.
