DUKE, 87*, BURIED SUNDAY SAL AGENT OVER 50 YEARS CARRSVILLE - Funeral services for John Francis Duke, who died Friday, April 10, were conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Beaver Dam Baptist Church by the Rev. Edwin C. Thornton, Jr., pastor. Burial was in the church cemetery with Masonic rites. Active pallbearers were Tall Jones, John Abbitt, Vaughan Beale, Carl Steinhardt, Lt. Gov. A.E.S. Stephens, George Franklin Whitley, Bobby Worrell and Dr. C.S. Crossland. A prominent lifetime resident of the community, he had been with the Seaboard Airline Railroad for more than 50 years, serving as agent in Franklin at the time of his retirement. For the last 17 years, he had served as assisted County Judge for Isle of Wight. He was an old and active member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, a charter member of the Ruritan Club, and an active member of Franklin Masonic Lodge 151 for 59 years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Merchants and Farmer Bank of Franklin. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mamie Nelms Duke; one son, John F. Duke, Jr.; two daughters, Elizabeth E. Duke and Louise E. Duke, all of Carrsville; one sister, Mrs. L.A. March of Greenwood, S.C.; one brother, J.A. Duke of Oxford, N.C., and one niece, Mrs. R.E. Bradsher of Oxford.
