ANNE EASLEY DASHIELL DIES FROM STRANGULATION Had Been Dead Several Hours When Found By Son Sunday Morning This entire community was shocked by the tragic death of Mrs. Anne Easley Dashiell, 39*, widow of Herbert H. Dashiell who was found dead in her room from strangulation by smoke Sunday morning by her son George Boots Dashiell, age eleven, at their home Baycliff Tavern of the Petersburg Highway four miles from Smithfield. When Boots after dressing Sunday morning failed to see his mother around the house he went to her room and found her lying across the bed cold and stiff. The door and windows were closed and there was a strong odor of smoke where the mattress had burned from a cigarette and smothered out. "Boots" ran to Claudie Jones' store at the crossroads and brought Mr. Jones back to the house. Dr. Parker, Isle of Wight County Coroner, was called stated Mrs. Dashiell had been dead several hours and rendered a verdict of "accidental death from strangulation by smoke." Funeral services were conducted by Rev. L.F. Paulette Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at the grave in Ivy Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: James Jordan, Harry Dashiell, Tom Dashiell, Joe Holloway, Frank Simpson, Jr., and Howard Gwaltney. The deceased is survived by a son, George Easley "Boots" Dashiell, her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Edwin M. Easley, of Bacon's Castle, and a sister Mrs. Thomas Dowler of Williamsburg.
