Prominent County Resident Harry G. Dashiell Sr. Dies At 78 In Obici Hospital 

  Harry Garland Dashiell, Sr., 78, former owner of Moonfield Farm and retired 
prominent farmer of Smithfield since 1920, died Friday morning at Obici 
Hospital after a short illness. 

  He was a native of Surry County and the son of the late Thomas L. and Mrs. 
Mary Holloway Dashiell. 

  Mr. Dashiell moved to Isle of Wight in 1895, where he attended Smithfield 
Male and Female Institute and was graduated from the Virginia Military 
Institute in 1911. 

  He was commissioned Captain of Artillery at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, in 
1917 and sailed with the American Expeditionary Forces in 1918.  He was also 
with the Army of Occupation in Mertlock, Germany, in 1919. 

  On returning to Smithfield he bought the Moonfield Farm where he resided 
until recently. 

  He married Segar Jordan Cofer in 1923.

  He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, past commander of the American 
Legion Post 49, served as Chairman of the Isle of Wight County Draft Board, 
former vice president of the Norfolk Co-operative Milk Producers Association, 
and past president of the Smithfield Ruritan Club. 

  Mr. Dashiell served on the Isle of Wight County Board of Supervisors from 
1950 until his retirement in 1966.  He served as Board chairman from 1961 
until his retirement. 

  Other than his wife, he is survived by two sons, Harry G. Dashiell, Jr. of 
Richmond and Col. John C. Dashiell with the U.S. Army in Vietnam; three 
sisters, Mrs. P.S. Rouse of Newport News, Mrs. Rufus Stark of Greenville, 
N.C., and Miss Nancy Dashiell of Smithfield; and seven grandchildren. 

  Graveside services were conducted Sunday, March 26, at 3:30 p.m. in Ivy Hill 
Cemetery by Colonial Funeral Home. 

  Rev. Warren P. Taylor and Rev Fred B. Wyand officiated.
