"The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 15, No. 28, Oct. 24, 1935, p. 1 col. 7 YOUTH KILLED YOUTH SUFFERS FATAL HURTS IN SUFFOLK CRASH Hamblin Edwards, of Isle of Wight, Victim of Auto Accident Hamblin Edwards, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Edwards of Isle of Wight county died Sunday morning at 5:15 o'clock at Lakeview [sic*] Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident Saturday night at 9:30 o'clock on North Main St. Edwards was riding with Percy S. Rife, of Rushmere, Isle of Wight County, when Rife crashed into a parked car on North Main street in front of Rawles Apartment. The accident was investigated by police, and Rife was charged with operating a car while under the influence of intoxicants. He was later released under $500 bond given by his father. Edwards stated after walking to police headquarters, that he was not hurt only a slight lick on the fore head and a bad headache. Dr. Edward Joyner who was in the office of the police headquarters offered to treat the cut on his head, but Edwards declined saying he only wanted a headache tablet and somewhere to lie down a little while. He was given a tablet and a cot in the office. Later when Dr. Joyner came back from Virginia Hospital, where he had been at the bedside of police officer Pratt, he found Edwards unconcious. [sic] Edwards was taken to Virginia Hospital, and Dr. Joyner and O.R. Yates worked over him until 5:15 when he died never having regained conciousness. [sic] Chief of Police Churn Sun. morning added to the charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants which was booked against Rife, the charge of manslaughter, and telephoned to Sheriff W.C. Whitehead, of Isle of Wight county, to re-arrest Rife and bring him to Suffolk. Edwards is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Edwards, Sr., of Isle of Wight and a brother, L.L. Edwards. He was a brother of Mrs. Ruth Edwards Williams, who died two weeks ago and before marriage was a nurse at the Lakeview Hospital. His Grief-stricken parents were inconsolable at the second tragedy in their lives within two weeks. Funeral services were held monday afternoon at 3 o'clock at Central Hill Baptist Church, Isle of Wight County by the Rev. Norman Jacobs. Burial in Church Cemetery. col. 4 L. HAMBLIN EDWARDS Funeral services for L. Hamblin Edwards, 20-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Edwards of Isle of Wight County, who met his death in an automobile accident on North Main Street in Suffolk Saturday night, were conducted Monday at Central Hill Baptist Church near Windsor, by the Rev. N.R. Jacobs and the Rev. L.F. Paulette. The church choir sang "Neare [sic] My God to Thee" and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye". A duet, "Does Jesus Care" was sung by Mrs. M.F. Hall and Mrs. L.H. Whitley. There were many floral tributes and the casket was covered with a pall of white dahlias and fern. Active pallbearers were Milvin [sic; Melvin] Uzzell, Wilbur Nelms, Morrison Holland, George H. Wilson, Hugh Gwaltney, John Hall, Jr., James Stephens, Claude A. Nurney. Honorary pallbearers were Robert W. Edwards, George Hall, Charles Jones, Roland Holland, Doc Holland, Jasper Holland, Marvin Eley, Winfield Stagg, James Jones, Dr. R.L. Seward, M.T. Whitley, W.R. Hall, J.E. White, Clarence Underwood, Robert White, Edwin Whitley, W.D. Joyner, Roger White. Burial was in the church cemetery. col. 7 RIFE GIVES BOND IN HIGHWAY DEATH Suffolk, Oct. 21 - Percy S. Rife, of Rushmere, who was the driver of the car in which L. Hamblin Edwards, Isle of Wight youth sustained the injuries that caused his death, was brought before Judge E.R. Curtis this morning and on charges of operating a car while intoxicated and manslaughter, was admitted to bail in the sum of $1000 with his father as security. The case is set for hearing on October 26.
