DIES FROM WOUNDS Harrison D. Edwards, who was in charge of substations of the Virginia Electric and Power Company in Northeastern North Carolina, died in the hospital at Elizabeth City, N.C., Monday night at 8:15 o'clock from a bullet wound in the abdomen, inflicted early last Wednesday by Alfred Hewitt, 21, of Elizabeth City. Edwards was shot when he and St. Clair Bailey, N.C. attorney, attempted to assist Hewitt to bed. The youth, apparently under the influence of liquor, broke away from the pair, left the room and returned with a pistol. He fired one shot, wounding Edwards, and afterward fled from the house, but was arrested near the city. Edwards went to Elizabeth City from Suffolk about two years ago, having been employed by the power company there also. He was a native of Smithfield, Va. He is survived by his wife, formerly Miss Lina Britt*, of Portsmouth, Va.; a daughter, Virginia, a year and a half old; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Edwards, a sister, Lillian and one brother, Robert, all of whom live near Smithfield. Hewitt has been held in jail since shortly after the shooting, pending the outcome of Edwards' injuries. Prosecuting Attorney W.W. Cahoon said he probably will be given a hearing in Recorder's Court immediately.
