George S. Lightner, pastor. Burial was in St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery, Benns Church. The casket was covered with a pall of Calla lilies and red carnations. Pallbearers were L.S. Burton, T.H. Birdsong, Jr., Elmo Holloway, Edgar Speight, Jep S. Morgan, Thomas L. Woodward, H.M. Haynes and J.M. Cross. Honorary pallbearers were members of the official board of Main Street Methodist Church. ****************************************************************************** D. W. Ewing, 66, Buried May 15 In St. Luke's Cemty. David Weldon Ewing, 66, 908 Pennsylvania Avenue, Suffolk insurance man and city Republican leader, died Wedhesday, May 20, at 8 P.M. at the Louise Obici Memorial Hospital of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was a son of the late Rev. Wesley O. Ewing [sic*] and Mrs. Laura Hott Ewing of Frederick County. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada Gilliam Ewing, of Suffolk; one daughter, Mrs. Emalee Ewing Philpott, of Duncan, Arizona; one brother, Joseph O. Ewing, of Newport News; one sister, Mrs. Catherine Terovolas of Washington, D. C.; one niece and one nephew. He had lived in Suffolk since 1939. He was a member of Main St. Methodist Church, the official Board of the church, and superintendent of the adult division of the church school. He was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 340 A.F. & A.M., and a member of Smithfield Lodge No. 239, International Order of Odd Fellows. In 1953, he was appointed by Judge John K. Hutton to membership of the Suffolk Electoral Board, an appointment he held until his deatih. He served as chairman of the Suffolk Republican Committee from 1940 until 1953. He resigned from the committee when he was appointed to the electoral board. He was a delegate to the National Republican Convention in 1948. From 1933 to 1939 he was associated with the Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. From 1939 to 1957, when he retired, he was associated with the Union Life Insurance Co. Since 1958 he served as a host for Historic St. Luke's Restoration near Smithfield. Funeral services were conducted at Main Street Methodist Church Friday at 3:30 P.M. by the Rev. George S. Lightner, pastor. Burial was in St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery, Benns Church. The body was taken from the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home to the church one hour before the services. His mother, Laura Isola (HOTT EWING; Mrs. Charles Peter) BAILEY (1867 - 1952), is buried with her parents & second husband in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Green Spring, Frederick Co.
