Dead is Walter J. English, 48, a packing plant worker. His car went off the outside of a curve into a pond on the S. Lane Gwaltney farm, 1½ miles east of Orbit. Sheriff Harold C. Taylor said the man's body was recovered, pulled from the pond by a wrecker. Gwaltney saw the splash when the car went into the pond at 11:10 A.M., the sheriff said. He went to the scene, and when he found tracks leading into the pond, he called Taylor. Dr. Hugh Fraser of Smithfield, Isle of Wight County medical examiner, said death was due to drowning. The body was taken to the Jones Funeral Home in Smithfield. Sheriff Taylor said a fertilizer salesman, Handy Moore of Orbit, passing the pond, dived in and located the car. State police joined in the investigation. A lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County, he had been employed in the Maintenance Department of Gwaltney, Inc., at Smithfield. He was a son of Mrs. Elizabeth Atkins English and the late Walter Lee English. He was a member of Isle of Wight Christian Church. Besides his mother, surviving are one brother, Littleton C. English of Norfolk; a sister, Mrs. Walter Long of Buena Vista, and nieces and nephews. A funeral service was conducted at the Bullock Funeral Home Sunday at 4 P.M. with burial in Central Hill Cemetery, Isle of Wight County.
