GWALTNEY BURIED SUNDAY IN OAKLAND CEM. George L. Gwaltney, Sr., 76, died October 10th at 7:50 o'clock at his home in Isle of Wight County after a short illness. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Annie L. Gwaltney; three sons, Doc A. Gwaltney of Nansemond County; G.L. Gwaltney Jr. of Chuckatuck and Elton M. Gwaltney of Suffolk; one daughter Mrs. Jack Bailey of Washington; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Pulley of Isle of Wight and Mrs. Emma Parkerson of Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Oakland Christian Church of which he was a member by the Rev. I.W. Johnson. Burial was in the church cemetery. George Lafayette GWALTNEY, Sr., d. 10 Oct 1946, at home, Isle of Wight Co., age 76, interred in Newman Memorial Cemetery*, Oakland Christian Church, near Chuckatuck, 13 Oct 1946, "The Smithfield (VA) Times," Vol. 29, No. 21, Oct. 16, 1946 *His monument, pictured with his Find a Grave Memorial (#157341596) gives "1871 - 1947" [sic!]. His father-in-law John Franklin UZZELL is buried there also. His mother, Mary Elizabeth (FULGHAM; Mrs. William R.) GWALTNEY {1845-1920}, is buried in Central Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. His paternal grandparents were William Reuben GWALTNEY {1806-1857} & Cherry (ATKINS) GWALTNEY {b. ca. 1814}, of Surry Co. They m. Jan 1834 in IoW.Co.
