[Special to The Times-Dispatch.] SUFFOLK, VA., November 15. - Mrs. Martha V. Gwathney, wife of Pembroke D. Gwathney, Sr., known as the "Peanut King," died last night at her home in Smithfield, Va., aged seventy-four years. The deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John E. Maxwell, of Norfolk, and Mrs. F.R. Berryman, of Smithfield, and one son, P.D. Gwathney, Jr., of Smithfield. MARTHA GWALTNEY DEAD SUFFOLK, Va., November 15. - Mrs. Martha V. Gwaltney, wife of Pembroke D. Gwaltney, Sr., the well-known "peanut king," died about 7 o'clock last evening at her home in Smithfield, Va., aged 74 years. Mrs. Martha Gwaltney had been in failing health for some time and her condition had been considered critical for several days. She had paralysis. Besides her husband the deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. John E. Maxwell of Norfolk and Mrs. F.R. Berryman of Smithfield; and one son, P.D. Gwathney Jr. of Smithfield. Drumwright (Surry Co. M.Reg. {BVS copy} p. 165) Her husband was a Confederate veteran. He enlisted in the Surry Light Artillery, but was detailed as a gunsmith. Returning to his unit for the retreat from Richmond, he was captured on the COOK farm near Farmville 6 Apr 1865 & held as a POW until 1 Jul. His obit appeared in the "Virginia-Pilot & Norfolk Landmark," Feb. 11, 1915, and is reprinted in Chapter 17, "The First Peanut King of the World" in: King, Helen Haverty, et al.
