Gwaltney Is Dead in Suffolk Mrs. G.W. Gwaltney, aged 64, formerly of Isle of Wight county, now of Suffolk, died Friday morning at 2:30 o'clock, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marion F. Vaughan, on Chestnut street, after a lingering illness. Mrs. Gwaltney is survived by her husband, G.G. [sic; G.W.] Gwaltney, four sons, F.W. Gwaltney, of Richmond, P.M. Gwaltney, of Hopewell, G.T. Gwaltney, of Portsmouth, and J.S. Gwaltney, of Suffolk, and two daughters, Mrs. T.V. Norfleet and Mrs. M.F. Vaughan, both of Suffolk. Three brothers, George Batten, of Portsmouth, M. Batten and Charles Batten, of Isle of Wight, two sisters, Mrs. J.J. Gwaltney, of Newport News, and Mrs. Ada Stevens [sic; Stephenson], of Portsmouth, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the grave in Mill Swamp Cemetery, on Saturday at 3 p.m. ****************************************************************************** Funeral Services of Mrs. Gwaltney Held The funeral services of Mrs. Mattie J. Gwaltney were conducted Saturday afternoon at the grave in Mill Swamp Church cemetery, at 3 o'clock by Rev. H.J. Goodwin. The floral designs were numerous and beautiful. Active pallbearers: Scott Gwaltney, Joe Stevens. Edward Gwaltney, Dodson Batten, Herman Stevens, Grover Stevens, Henry Gwaltney, Claude Stevens. Honorary: William Gwaltney, George A. D.Cert. 6457 (Suffolk #86) Her father Monroe Clements BATTEN (ca. 1834 - 1881) was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. I, 3rd VA Infantry. His widow Louisa J. (GWALTNEY) BATTEN (b. Dec 1839) applied for a pension 1 Apr 1903. They had m. 23 Jan 1860 in her native Surry Co. (#3). Her sister Ida Carolina BATTEN (1872 - 1956) m. George's brother Joseph Jackson GWALTNEY; they are buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Newport News.
