GWALTNEY, JR., LEADING CITIZEN, DIES SUDDENLY Funeral Services for Widely-Known Smithfield Resident, Active in Numerous Enterprises Conducted Tuesday Afternoon Pembroke D. Gwaltney Jr., president P.D. Gwaltney Jr., & Co. Inc. packers and shippers of the widely known Smithfield Ham, died suddenly Sunday afternoon at 3:15 from a heart attack at his home here. He was 74 years old, having been born September 3, 1861. Mr. Gwaltney was the son of P.D. Gwaltney Sr., founder of Gwaltney and Company, and the late Mrs. Martha Harris Gwaltney. He was President of the Home Telephone Company, of this city, and was interested in almost every enterprise in the community. Until Sunday afternoon he had been in his usual health, and active in the affairs of his various enterprises. Surviving Mr. Gwaltney are his widow, Mrs. Estelle Darden Gwaltney; three sons, P.D. Gwaltney, 3rd, Howard W. and Julius Darden Gwaltney, all of Smithfield; four grandchildren; two nieces, Mrs. Mary Brown of Norfolk, and Mrs. Arthur Colins, of Richmond and two nephews, Frank G. Berryman of Smithfield, and Edward Maxwell of Virginia Beach. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence by the Rev. L.D. Staples, pastor of the Smithfield Methodist Church, assisted by the Rev. W.W. Norris. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Smithfield. Active pallbearers were A. Taylor Darden and W.H. Darden, Jr., of Suffolk; J.W. Luter, Jr., V.S. Richardson, W. Joseph Holloway, F.G. Berryman, Dr. Hugh Warren, of Smithfield, and J.S. Marshall, Jr., of Wilksbarre, [sic; Wilkes- Barre,] Pa. The floral tributes were many and seventy-five men were required to serve to carry the flowers. Despite the bitter cold weather several hundred attended the services and many were from out of town.
