CHARLES COOPER HOWELL

   SMITHFIELD - A funeral service for Charles Cooper Howell, 82, was held 
Saturday at 2 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home by the Revs. Warren F. Taylor and 
J. Currie Carter.  Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery.

   Howell died Wednesday in Walter Reed Convalescent Center, Gloucester.

   A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. 
Elizabeth Betts Howell.  He was a retired banker with Merchants & Farmers 
Bank, where he served as cashier, vice president and president.

   He retired from banking six years ago.  When the bank merged with Virginia 
National Bank, he was vice president and manager of the Smithfield Branch of 
Virginia National.  He had served on the board of the Home Telephone Co. and 
the Smithfield Water Co.  He was also a past town councilman of Smithfield.

   He was a 55 year member of Courtland Masonic Lodge 85 and member of the 
Scottish Rite Bodies of Newport News, and Khedive Shrine Temple of Norfolk. 
He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Courtland.

   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sandra H. Hall of Shacklefords; a 
sister, Mrs. Annie H. Vaughan of Suffolk; and three grandchildren.
