Mr. Hales, a native of Kenly, N.C., was member of Moose Lodge 898, Portsmouth. He was a Baptist. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Edmondson of Antioch, Tenn.; two sons, Robert M. Hales of Fort Meade, Md., and Harold J. Hales of Chesapeake; four sisters, Dorothy Furr of Hampton, Vera Johnson of Smithfield, N.C., Janice Batten of Micro, N.C., and Betty L. Pender of Kenly; two brothers, J.P. Hales of Fayetteville, N.C., and Fletcher B. Hales of Kenly; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Colonial Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald R. Rhoton. Burial will be in St. Luke’s Memorial Park.
