Found in 20 feet of water just under the west side of the bridge was Maynard Odell Holland, who had been reported missing from his home since Saturday morning at 10 a.m. Police officers from Isle of Wight County Saturday night discovered Holland's car parked at the entrance of the Lake Prince bridge near the Girl Scout camp. His cap, shoes, and wallet were found in the car. The ignition key was in the trunk of the car. Doubt at the time whether he actually drowned prompted a thorough search of Windsor. Nansemond County Sheriff Frank Culpepper conducted the search, since the section of the lake where the car was found is in Nansemond. From about 9 a.m. yesterday crowds began to gather near the bridge. Parked cars were seen extending several block-lengths along the road approaching the bridge. A diving team from Fort Eustis was summoned mid-morning, yesterday, as crowds of curiosity-seekers grew close to 100. Just after 12:30 p.m., a U.S. Army truck laden with diving apparatus drove up and set up the compressed-air diving equipment. Two divers, Marvin Snyder, specialist first class, and Harold Carbonnell, specialist third class, donned woolen sweatsuits and air masks and began the search. The divers worked on opposite sides of the bridge in about 20 feet of water, and systematically scoured the lake-bottom near the shore. Snyder, of the 110th Diving Section, Fort Eustis, Colonel Bagley commanding, found the body lying on the bottom of the lake near the shore after 15 to 20 minutes of searching. The diving crew was headed by Warrant Officer Kenneth L. Harvey. Nansemond County Coroner Dr. Richardson G. Joyner, arriving at the scene at about 2 p.m., confirmed the death-by-drowning report. Holland, a life-long resident of Isle of Wight County, was well-known in Windsor and vicinity, having worked as a carpenter there for many years. Funeral services, arranged by the Bullock Funeral Home of Smithfield, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Antioch Christian Church, of which Holland was a member. He will be buried in the church cemetery. Surviving besides his wife and son are three brothers, Wilbur Lee Holland, of Windsor; James Henry Holland, of Elizabeth City; and Junius W. Holland, of Chuckatuck; three sisters, Mrs. G.M. Rogers, of Newport News; Mrs. Otney Uzzell, of Zuni, and Mrs. R.L. Whiteman, of Norfolk. Holland was the son of the late Thomas Walter Holland and Mrs. Susie Powell Holland. The dead man was identified as Maynard Holland, a carpenter, by investigator Ray H. Early of the Nansemond County police. Army divers from Fort Eustis recovered the body only about 12 feet from the shore near the entrance to the bridge. The investigation began late on Saturday night, said Early, when someone notified Isle of Wight County Sheriff Harold C. Taylor that Holland's car had been parked for some time just off the shoulder near the bridge entrance. The informant, an acquaintance of Holland, recognized the automobile. Police found Holland's cap, shoes, and wallet in the car and the ignition key in the trunk, but Holland himself could not be found. No attempt was made to drag the lake, said Early, since the bottorn is covered with tree stumps. Instead, police asked for the aid of Fort Eustis. The divers recovered the body in less than 30 minutes. The body was fully clothed, except for shoes, said Early. Dr. G. Richardson Joyner, Nansemond county coroner, viewed the body and said death was due to drowning. Holland was last seen alive Saturday about 10 A.M. by a member of his family in Windsor. He was the son of the late Thomas Walter and Susie Powell Holland. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nellie Braswell Holland; a son, Francis Odell Holland, of Smithfield; three brothers, Wilbur Lee Holland, of Windsor; James Henry Holland of Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and Junius Walter Holland of Chuckatuck; three sisters, Mrs. G.M. Rogers of Newport News, Mrs. Otney Uzzell of Zuni, and Mrs. R.L. Whiteman, of Norfolk, and two grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday at 2 P.M. at Antioch Christian Church by the Rev. Charles Hutchinson, pastor, assisted by the Rev. R.E. Brittle. Burial was in the church cemetery. The body was taken from the Bullock Funeral Home, Smithfield, to the the Church at 1 P.M.
