All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ THOMAS CARR HOLLAND Thomas Carr Holland, for many years an honored citizen of the Franklin community, died at Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, December 10, as the result of injuries sustained while engaged in his work as section foreman of the Seaboard Air Line Railway here. Mr. Holland was born near Branchville Decmeber 4, 1865, the son of the late Carr and Mrs. Narcissus Newton Holland. He had been in the service os the Seaboard for 52 years, and was the oldest employee of the railroad in point of service. He had spent the greater part of his life in Isle of Wight County near Franklin and was known and esteemed as a man of honor, integrity and good citizenship. In 1896 he married Miss Grizzelle Hayes, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Hayes of Isle of Wight, his first wife dying in 1907. Of this union there survived three sons, Thos. C., Jr., T. Hayes and Jack W. Holland of Franklin, and two daughters, Mrs. R.A. Cox of Smithfield, Va. and Miss Grizzelle Holland of Franklin. In 1908 Mr. Holland married Miss Mary Magdalene Ivey of Branchville, who survives him with a daughter, Mrs. J.E. Nancy of Trenton, N.J., and two sons, Ivey Holland who is teaching in Pittsylvania County and James Holland. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. T.P. Wrench of Smyrna, Delaware, Mrs. W. W. Clark of Woodville, N.C., and Mrs. W.F. Howell of Franklin, and two half-sisters, Mrs. A.W. Rives and Mrs. J.C. Niblett of Norfolk, besides four grandchildren. For many years he had been a loyal and consistent member of High Street M.E. Church here and of the R.M. Chandler Men’s Bible Class. Funeral services were conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock by his Pastor, Rev. Roscoe Jones, assisted by Dr. Elwood Jones and Rev. R.D. Stephenson, and Rev. F.B. Oglesby of Smithfield M.E. Church. During the rites Mrs. Herbert G. Cobb, Miss Lizzie Mae Cutchin, J. Edgar Weede and Robert Vaughan sang "When the Roll Is Called up Yonder, I’ll Be There." In the presence of a large company of friends the body was borne to Beaver Dam Cemetery for burial, the active pallbearers being: Nelson Gardner of Suffolk, J. Edgar Weede, Dr. J.B. Powell, Geo. H. Parker, E.P. Jones, Harry Steinhardt and Herman Howell of Franklin. Honorary pallbearers were members of the R.M. Chandler Bible class and Frank M. Cobb and J.D. Johnson. The casket was covered with a large spray of white carnations, pink rosebuds and gypsophilia, and there were many beautiful floral tributes.
