Furman Kenney, pastor of the Smithfield Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Antioch Church Cemetery in Isle of Wight County. Acting pallbearers will be Carl C. Irvine, Gordon L. Mumford [sic; Munford], H.O. Umphlette, William E. Mitchell, E.S. Turner and Hugh Gwaltney. ****************************************************************************** Thos. P. Holland, 82 Buried June 25, 1954 In Antioch Cem'tery Thomas Patrick Holland, 82, died June 25, 1954 in the Louise Obici Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A native of Gates County, N.C., he had lived in Smithfield for the past 22 years and was a member of the Smithfield Baptist Church and of the Baracca Bible Class of that church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Hattie Johnson Holland; two daughters, Mrs. J.R. Ellis and Mrs. C.H. Duck, and a foster son, Ralph R. Holland, all of Smithfield; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 P.M. in the chapel of the Bullock Funeral Home with Dr. R. Furman Kenney, pastor of the Smithfield Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery. M.Reg. 1903 #22) Ancestry.com VA Select Marriages 1785-1940 shows his parents as George W. & Sarah E. BARLOW - transposed from the previous entry. His parents, Richard Goodman & Sophia Jane (ODOM) HOLLAND, m. 8 Nov 1866 in Nansemond Co. His father was a Confederate veteran, having served as a private in Co. K, 41st VA Infantry. He was shot in the left breast and bayonetted in the mouth, losing two teeth, at the Battle of the Crater, 30 Jul 1864. He farmed in Isle of Wight Co., Gates Co., NC, & Nansemond Co. He applied for a pension 25 May 1900, with the bullet still in his body, causing much pain & shortness of breath.
